"Straniero," a stop-motion animated music video directed by Davide Vicari and Dario Imbrogno, features Italian music artists Massimo Pericolo, Tedua, and Neima Ezza, offering a distinctive take on storytelling through animation.
At its core, the video explores the tension between concealing and revealing one's true identity. Anthropomorphic cats, clad in black masks, prowl through urban streets exuding confidence. They participate in classic gangster-inspired activities, playing poker, wielding weapons, and asserting their dominance over their environment. Yet, their composure cracks as they chase the red laser sights of their own guns, reverting to ordinary feline behaviors after a night of misfortune.
This duality of toughness and vulnerability forms the heart of the narrative. The masks the characters wear serve not only to hide their identities but to underscore their attempts to navigate and control a world that isn’t naturally theirs. It’s a clever commentary on identity and the roles we play to belong.
By merging anthropomorphism with urban aesthetics, the video stands out as an innovative exploration of style and substance. It depicts a realm where these cats, with their proverbial nine lives, embody the struggles and aspirations of a gritty urban tale.
Through a blend of humor, depth, and technical brilliance, Vicari and Imbrogno have created a music video that pushes boundaries, making "Straniero" a deserving selection for Music Video of the Month.
